Purpose By addressing transportation issues and plans related to streets and highways, the airport and the ports, and the environment, the Chamber works to ensure an effective area infrastructure.
Structure The Infrastructure Committee meets on a monthly basis to discuss, and take action on area infrastructure issues and requirements. The Committee is organized into sub-committees that concentrate on: highways and urban streets, the North Carolina State Ports, Wilmington International Airport and the Environment. A separate Anti-Litter Committee called HALT (Help Attack Litter & Trash) is addressing litter and blight problems in the area. Committee presentations and discussions include:
· Mission and infrastructure involvement of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers · Re-establishment of passenger rail to Wilmington from Raleigh and Charlotte · The Cape Fear River Program, which monitors the health of the Cape Fear River · New transportation initiatives to ease area traffic problems · Concentration on specific road and highway projects included in the state's Transportation Improvement Plan
Process The Committee reviews and discusses infrastructure issues as they affect Chamber members and the community and recommends action by the Board of Directors when necessary. The sub-committees assume responsibility for monitoring the status of projects. Committee involvement includes:
· Inviting the Secretary, NCDOT, to address Chamber members on the status of local projects included in the Transportation Improvement Plan. · Participating in the meetings of the Transportation Advisory Committee. · Coordinating presentations during public hearings on infrastructure issues. · Assisting other government agencies as they address infrastructure issues. · Lobby in support of infrastructure requirements as determined by Chamber membership.
Opportunities Chamber members may participate in the Infrastructure Committee, make presentations at the Transportation Advisory Committee meetings, present views at Public Forums and request the Committee's assistance on specific infrastructure issues.
